Essential Steps in Moving

Moving is stressful enough.  Focusing on key essentials can help the big transition go smoother.  Here are the top things to focus on in your move:

Security:

  • Change the locks:  Safety is crucial.  It is especially important if you don’t know how many people have keys to the old locks.
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors: Ensure they're functioning properly and replace batteries if needed.

Essentials:

  • Familiarize yourself with where the shut-off valves for water and gas are located: In case of an emergency, you'll want to know where to stop the flow quickly.
  • Deep clean the kitchen: Even if the house appears clean.  It is important to ensure the area you are preparing food is hygienic.
  • Set up utilities: Contact area providers to transfer or establish service for electricity, water, trash collection, and internet.

Settling In:

  • Update your address: Inform the post office, banks, and other important contacts the details of your new address.
  • Unpack necessities: Focus on unpacking items you'll need right away, like toiletries, medications, and a change of clothes.  Labeling boxes can simplify this process.  It is also helpful to pack something quick and easy to eat.
  • Explore your surroundings: Get familiar with your neighborhood and locate essential places like grocery stores and pharmacies.

Remember, unpacking and decorating can come later. Focus on safety, essentials, and getting settled in your new surroundings first.
